Privacy Policy

Routespinner is a free tool for finding running routes. It has no accounts, no sign-up, and no ads. This page explains what data is involved when you use it and the third-party services that make it work.

Who we are

Routespinner ("we", "us") operates the website at routespinner.com. For any privacy questions you can contact us at hello@routespinner.com.

Your location

To suggest routes near you, Routespinner can request your location through your browser's geolocation feature. This only happens after your browser asks for your permission, and you can decline — you can also type a starting point manually instead.

• Your coordinates are used to centre the map and to query routing data for your area.
• Your most recent location is stored in your browser's localStorage so the app starts faster next time. This stays on your device and you can clear it by clearing your browser data.
• We do not maintain a profile of your movements or a location history on our servers.

Data stored on your device

To keep the app fast and reduce repeated network requests, Routespinner stores data locally in your browser:

• localStorage — your last-used location and preferences.
• IndexedDB — a cache of OpenStreetMap map data for areas you have searched.
• Service worker cache — application files, so the app can load quickly and work offline as a Progressive Web App.

This data never leaves your device except as part of the third-party requests described below. Clearing your browser's site data removes it.

Analytics

We use analytics to understand how the app is used and to improve it. Analytics run only on the production site, not in local development.

• Umami — privacy-focused, cookieless website analytics that record aggregate usage (such as page views) without tracking you across other sites.
• Mixpanel — product analytics for events such as starting a search, viewing a route, exporting a GPX file, and sharing a route. Our Mixpanel data is processed on EU servers. Mixpanel session replay is enabled, which records interactions with the page (such as clicks and navigation) to help us diagnose issues and improve usability.

Third-party services

Routespinner relies on these external services to function. When you use the app, your browser makes requests to them, which means they may receive your IP address and the relevant request data (for example, the map area you are viewing):

Google Elevation API	Elevation profiles for routes (requested via our own /api/elevation proxy, so the request goes to our server, which forwards it to Google)

Umami & Mixpanel	Analytics (see above)

Each of these providers has its own privacy policy governing how they handle data they receive.

What we don't do

• We don't ask you to create an account or provide personal details.
• We don't sell your data.
• We don't show ads or use advertising trackers.

Children

Routespinner is not directed at children and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated date above.
